Photo's by Quacksplat | JULY 2007

First of all I'd like to say thanks to Jeeps for asking me if I could do a show for TastefulPixels. Where to start? Photography has been a part of my life for about the last 12 years. It started when I saw a television show about the photographer Sally Mann. She is rather a controversial figure in American Art circles. Very talented but her ideas tend to invoke strong reactions in her audiences.

After seeing the show I went and bought a few photo magazines and very quickly became hooked. I bought my first SLR within a few weeks and joined my local club and I have been taking photos ever since.

Any of you who have read my own Blog will know that photography is one of the most important things in my life. It's about the one medium I have been able to express myself though and it's a major counter balance to the stresses and strains of everyday life.

I have been very lucky and through the clubs I belong to I have meet some wonderful photographers who have inspired and helped me along the way. In turn I have had a chance to help others improve their photography by giving workshops and judging competitions at various clubs in my local area. My top tip for anyone wanting to know more about photography - join a club, but make sure it's the right one for you.

While I'm learning to live with with my skills as a photographer, I get very frustrated as a blogger so I have decided to keep this simple. I'm just going to show you a few images and talk a little about them. Images marked with BPE have been accepted into a British Photographic Exhibitions exhibitions. Those marked FIAP have been successful in FIAP exhibitions.

I thought I would start out with an image of my home town. This was taken in the Abbey Gardens in Bury St. Edmunds on an evening photo walk with Bury St. Edmunds Photographic Society. I love the way the evening light has painted the scene.

This the shell memorial to Benjamin Britten is on a beach just north of Aldeburgh. Again this was taken with a low evening sun. It's the best time of day for outdoor photography as the light is working for you. The next one was also taken at Aldeburgh.

Title: On the Beach (BPE). One of my more creative efforts. I used to do a lot of processing in Photoshop® but all of my current work is as close to "as taken" as I can get it.

Title: Beach Bum. I do like to go the seaside when I can. I was lining up my shot and this little chap just ran in as I pressed the shutter.

Title: Follow the leader. Back to one taken in Bury St Edmunds this time during the "Beating the retreat" last year.

Title: Lobby (BPE, FIAP) This is my most successful image to date. Spent hours in photoshop moving the girl and taking various bits out. This image was accepted in to the FIAP world cup exhibition.

Title: Pigs in winter sun (BPE, FIAP) Taken while leaning over a fence, on a major trunk road just outside Burt St. Edmunds. Again it's the good lighting which makes the picture. The mist in the background was added in PS. You may have noticed that all of my images are cropped down to what I consider to be the best format. You can improve an image a great deal by leaving all the stuff you don't need out.

Title: Highland Cows. This is the only film image here, taken before I had a digital camera. Most of the falling snow was added in PS.

Title: Starling. Taken on a trip to the zoo during a tea break.

Title: Dwarf Mongoose. Another zoo shot. I use my trips to the zoo as practice for my nature photography. You can practice your technique and camera handling skills so when you go out into the field they are second nature.

Title: Mother with new born grey seal pup. (FIAP, BPE) The above practice paid off when I went to a seal sanctuary last year.

I do hope you have enjoyed looking at some of my work, I tried to include a variety of images so you an idea of the type of stuff I get up to. Thanks for reading this far.

Happy imaging

Pete
